About QuarterlyWise
Last reviewed 2 September 2026
Hi, I'm Andrew. I decided to create QuarterlyWise because I run my own small business, and when Making Tax Digital started landing on people like me, I got tired of guidance that was either written for accountants or written by companies trying to sell me software. So I started writing the version I wished existed — plain, specific, and honest about what actually changes and what doesn't.
What QuarterlyWise is
QuarterlyWise is a small, independent site focused on Making Tax Digital — the phased rollout that's bringing sole traders and landlords onto quarterly digital tax reporting between 2026 and 2028. It exists because MTD is a big, confusing change landing on a lot of people at once, and most of the content written about it is either too technical, too vague, or too focused on selling a particular piece of software.
I try to do three things differently:
- Answer the actual question first. Every guide on this site opens with a direct, specific answer before the supporting detail — not a slow build-up.
- Stay evergreen, not trend-chasing. MTD's thresholds and dates are set in law, not opinion, so the guides here are built to stay accurate with occasional review rather than needing constant rewriting.
- Be honest about what this site is and isn't. It's not a firm of accountants, and nothing here is personalised advice. Where a decision genuinely needs a professional, I say so and point you to gov.uk or a qualified accountant instead of guessing.
What QuarterlyWise isn't
QuarterlyWise isn't a firm of accountants, a software company, or a bank — it's one person's attempt to explain a genuinely confusing change properly. I don't offer personalised tax advice, and this site should never be your only source for a decision that actually affects your tax position. See the full disclaimer for the detail on what that means.
How this site makes money
QuarterlyWise is supported by display advertising and, on some pages, affiliate links to the accounting software and business bank accounts covered in the comparisons. If you sign up for something through one of those links, I may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. This never changes which products get covered or how they're described — the comparisons reflect my own assessment of each product, using each provider's own approved materials rather than independent claims about them. Pages that carry affiliate links say so clearly, near the top.
Where to start
- Not sure when MTD affects you? Use the free checker → — enter your income, get your exact start date.
- The complete MTD guide → — thresholds, penalties, what actually changes, all in one place.
- Compare MTD-ready software → — FreeAgent, Xero, QuickBooks, Sage, and Zoho Books, compared properly.
If you sell online (MTD for Etsy & eBay sellers), work in construction (MTD for CIS subcontractors), rent out property (MTD for landlords), or are just trying to work out which business bank account makes sense (compare accounts), there are dedicated guides for each of those too.
Prefer to talk to someone directly?
Everything on this site is general guidance, and sometimes it's best to speak with a professional who deals with people in your exact position every week. If you're based in the Birmingham & Black Country area of the West Midlands, I've worked with local accountants who specialise in sole traders and small businesses for over a decade — get in touch and, if you'd like, I can put you in touch with them for a free initial chat. (I may receive a referral fee if you go on to become their client — see the disclaimer for detail.)
Questions or corrections
Rules and figures change, and I'd rather fix a mistake than leave it live. The best way to reach me is the contact form — I read every message myself.
